Beer Tuesday - Terrapin Phlux Capacitor

Terrapin Phlux Capacitor. Oak aged american ale. This is Terrapin's #16 side project. If you're not familiar with Terrapin's side projects, they brew one shot beers from time to time. I'm a huge fan of Terrapin and their creative beer creations.

I guess they thought that since it was oak aged, they didn't need to add much other flavor to this beer, though. Its not bad, its just kind of boring. Not a very engaging flavor. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either. I think 22oz of it was kind of excessive, and I found myself struggling to finish the other half once I got through it. In fact I sort of forgot about the last bit that was still in the bottle.

9.8% ABV. American "Strong" Ale.

Score: Same ol' same ol'. I can't even really think of anything witty to write about it.

Beer Tuesday - Terrapin Hopzilla

Hopzilla is one of the few "monster beer tour" beers from Terrapin that I actually enjoy. What's not to enjoy about a good Imperial IPA/Double IPA though?

With a 10.8% ABV, it packs a hell of a kick. One of my favorite things about DIPAs is the huge flavor that they carry. This beer manages to balance the highly citrusy flavor, monster dose of hops, and malt, with the alcohol content. Unfortunately, with it being so strong, its hard to drink more than one at a time. As with most in the Terrapin Monster Beer Tour series, this comes in 4 packs that ranges from $8.50 to $11.50 depending on where you shop.

Terrapin Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout.

So many beer to try, so little time. I tried this over at my friend's house. We have a little beer exchange going. I stop by his place and try his beers, he tries mine. I would never have straight up bought this, but since he had it I gave it a shot.

Terrapin's website describes it as, "Our brand new seasonal selection! The Terrapin “Moo-Hoo” Chocolate Milk Stout proudly uses cocoa nibs and shells from Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company to give this beer its great taste!"

They sure seemed excited about it. I wasn't so sure. It had a lot smokier of a flavor than I generally enjoy, and this beer is dark dark dark. The extra ingredients gave it a lot of weight going down, and the aftertaste was this weird bit chocolately taste. I probably couldn't knock back more than one of these bad boys. Not to mention a 7.7% alcohol content which gives it the strength above an average beer.

I'd probably give it 2 out of 4 stars. Its halfway there. Nothing I'd buy, but interesting to try as a freebie.

beer review tuesday - Terrapin Sunray and Monk's Revenge

Now if you've been reading my blog and paying attention, you probably think that I'm all over Terrapin's nuts, thinking they're great. However I'd just like to draw some attention to a couple of beers Terrapin makes that are absolutely disgusting.



Monk's Revenge - This is a double IPA from the "Monster Beer Tour" that comes out in March. Supposedly its a belgian style mixed with IPA. I call this a marriage of just awful. Fortunately its only seasonal and they only release this abomination in March. I bought my 4 pack in March. As you can see, I took this picture in August. In fact, its still sitting in my garage. I haven't had the heart to finish the other three bottles yet. I hate to waste beer and throw it out, but it isn't something I'd push on my friends either.



Sunray Wheat Beer - The bottle makes a point to let you know that this beer is brewed with HONEY. Nothing wrong with that. However whatever the hell else they mixed it with gives this beer a very disgusting flavor, and the aftertaste is awful. I ended up pouring this damn thing out after drinking a very small amount. Later I went back to give it a second chance, with the same results. Just awful. Even the beer advocate gives this beer a C grade, and all the alcoholics there are very easy to please. Thank god this is a seasonal beer as well and it will go away soon. In fact, all Terrapin's Seasonal Beers are gross. This one just happens to be the worst. Avoid avoid avoid.

Beer Review Tuesday Time! Terrapin Big Hoppy Monster

Terrapin Brewery's Big Hoppy Monster.

This beer is the shit. Hands down! This is part of Terrapin's Monster Beer Tour series, and only comes out in August. This is one of those beers that if you see it, get it. Otherwise, it will be gone; and you won't be able to get it again until next year. Big Hoppy Monster is definitely one of the seasonal beers I look forward to finding.

Imperial Red Ale, 8.75%. This is one of those beers that I can just sit and savor, and when I cash one I feel bad that its gone.

beer tuesdays - Terrapin Hopsecutioner

Today I bring you the Hopsecutioner IPA from the Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, GA.

From the package, "Here ye, here ye…All hopheads shall herewith rejoice! Terrapin has recruited ye old Hopsecutioner to execute the exact hop profile for this killer IPA!"

And indeed, it is a killer IPA. The Terrapin Beer Company pride themselves with mixing different types of hops together to achieve a smooth blend. You'll see that lots of small breweries take pride in where their hops come from, the types of hops they use, etc etc. Terrapin is no exception.

This beer is 7.2% alcohol, but is one of those beers where you can't taste the alcohol content at all. In my opinion, this is a fine session beer despite its higher alcohol content. This fact makes the Hopsecutioner a bit tricksy!

Hopsecutioner has a subtle orange peel flavor to it. It goes well with the decently strong hop flavor. It is very well balanced. I can only imagine how many batches of beer they went through to get this just perfect.
