During anaesthesia and surgery, atropine is used to help keep the heart beat
normal.
A common side effect after surgery due to atropine use during anaesthesia is urinary
retention (due to anticholinergic effects on the urinary sphincter).
Patients may also feel excessive thirst as a side effect, and that is why it is common for people to complain of feeling thirsty post-operatively.
