. Budd Dwyer was the Pennsylvania State Treasurer from 1980-1987. In December of 1986, Dwyer was convicted of the crime of receiving bribes while in office. Dwyer maintained his innocence throughout the trial and refused to resign his elected post. On January 22nd, 1987, the day before his sentencing in court and jail time, Dwyer called a televised public press conference in his office. His last words were, "...I
am going to die in office..." (Warning, the video is very graphic).
Tragically, twenty years after Dwyers suicide, the man whose testimony led to the conviction of Dwyer admitted to lying in court. This revealed that the accusations of bribery against Dwyer were untrue. Dwyer had not been lying when he said that he was innocent.
