Cicadas

This is a cicada I found chillin on my deck the other night. In case you're not familiar with cicadas, it is the latin word for "tree cricket."

The north american cicada I am holding has a 14 year life cycle. They spend most of their lives underground, feeding on roots. That means the adult cicada I am holding in the picture is 14 years old! That's pretty old in bug years.

Cicadas have a very recognizable sound that they make, and sometimes during the day when the temperature is right. Here's a youtube video of a cicada making noise http://youtu.be/mah26og11ms

This looks more like a leaf hopper or a locust. Cicada legs aren't that long, and the head is all wrong
